Trump Sees Rising Support from Democrats and Black Voters, Poll Suggests
Recent polling data has unveiled a surprising trend: President Trump is garnering increased support from demographics that have traditionally leaned Democratic.
A poll by Rasmussen, conducted from October 2-4, 2023, indicates a growing lead for Trump in the 2024 Election race. The data reveals that 53% of voters are leaning towards Trump, with 38% being “very likely” and an additional 15% being “somewhat likely” to cast their vote for him.
A standout finding from this poll is the shift in Democratic voter sentiment. A significant 30% of Democrats expressed they are at least “somewhat likely” to vote for Trump, with 19% being “very likely.” This is a marked increase from the 2016 election when Trump secured only 5% of the Democratic vote, hinting at possible internal shifts within the Democratic party or dissatisfaction with its leadership.
Another highlight is Trump's appeal among younger voters. He has garnered 55% support from the 18-39 age group, a demographic that Republicans have historically found challenging to attract. Additionally, 54% of voters aged 40-64 also lean towards Trump.
A notable shift is evident in the black community's voting intentions. An impressive 50% of black voters are leaning towards Trump, a stark contrast to the 2020 election when Biden secured 87% of the black vote. This change might indicate a growing disenchantment with the Democratic Party among black voters.
Trump also enjoys a 52% support rate among voters categorized as “other,” suggesting his policies and leadership style are resonating across diverse demographics.
The poll further delved into the potential influence of Trump's vice-presidential pick. While 57% felt the choice wouldn't significantly impact their decision, younger voters (aged 18-39) differed, with only 27% feeling the same. Within this age group, 24% and 23% felt that a female or black vice president, respectively, would make them more inclined to support Trump.
However, the political arena is ever-evolving. Factors like Robert F Kennedy Jr. entering the race as an Independent and the recent Hamas attack on Israel, especially in light of Biden's decision to unfreeze $6 billion for Iran, could sway voter sentiment.
This poll underscores a notable shift in voter preferences towards Trump, especially among groups that haven't traditionally supported Republican candidates. It remains to be seen if these trends persist as the 2024 election approaches.
