Police Officer Killed in Minneapolis Shooting, Suspect Also Dead

MINNEAPOLIS (May 31, 2024) — A tragic shooting incident in Minneapolis on Thursday has left a police officer, two civilians, and the suspected gunman dead, according to city officials. The incident unfolded at an apartment complex on Blaisdell Avenue near 22nd Street, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting a massive response from law enforcement and emergency services.
The fallen officer has been identified as 28-year-old Jamal Mitchell, a dedicated member of the Minneapolis Police Department with approximately 1 ½ years of service. Mitchell, who was engaged to be married and a loving father, was fatally shot while attempting to render aid during the chaotic scene.
Assistant Chief Katie Blackwell of the Minneapolis Police Department reported that officers were met with gunfire upon arrival at the scene of a reported double shooting. At approximately 6:45 p.m., the Minneapolis Police Department posted on Twitter that two officers had been injured and others were also hurt in an active incident in the Whittier neighborhood. The department urged residents to avoid the area as the investigation continued.
Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, expressed her condolences, stating, "I am devastated to learn about the MPD officer killed and another critically injured this evening as they were working to keep our community safe." She and her husband were praying for the families of the officers and all those affected by the violence.
Governor Tim Walz ordered the Minnesota State Patrol to assist the police department, and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the active shooting scene.
