Norovirus Outbreak Tied to Northwestern University's $1 Burrito Event, Investigation Underway
Evanston Health and Human Services Department is currently probing a norovirus outbreak that has been linked to a discounted burrito event held for Northwestern University students. The "$1 Burrito event," in collaboration with Big Wig Tacos, occurred last Saturday and has since been connected to numerous student illnesses.
Complaints from students started pouring in on Monday, with reports of stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea after partaking in the food served at the event. This prompted the health department to launch an immediate inspection of Big Wig Tacos to ascertain the source of the outbreak.
In response to these developments, Big Wig Tacos has been actively cooperating with the Evanston Health Department's ongoing investigation. The restaurant, in a statement, expressed uncertainty about the outbreak's origin within their premises, especially considering a recent routine health inspection by the Evanston Health Department had revealed no issues. They highlighted the commonality of norovirus outbreaks in communal settings like colleges and universities.
Despite the uncertainty, Big Wig Tacos is not taking any chances. They have initiated comprehensive measures, including enhanced cleaning and sanitization protocols, focusing especially on areas prone to virus transmission.
The CDC defines norovirus as an extremely contagious virus that can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach pain. To prevent the spread of this virus, the CDC advises thorough hand washing and the careful rinsing of fruits and vegetables.
As the investigation continues, both the Evanston Health and Human Services Department and Big Wig Tacos are committed to addressing this health concern promptly and ensuring the safety and well-being of all those affected.
