Magnetic Ball Science Kit Recalled for Child Safety Concerns
Walmart is recalling a science kit sold on its website due to potential ingestion hazards for children. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued an alert regarding the "Relax 5mm Science Kit, Large Hematite Magnets Magnetic Stones Building Blocks," which consists of 216 small, powerful magnetic balls.
The CPSC's concern is that these magnets are stronger than federal safety standards allow and pose serious health risks if ingested. Between 2017 and 2021, there were 2,400 cases of magnet ingestions treated in emergency rooms, and seven deaths have been reported related to hazardous magnet ingestion.
High-powered magnets, when swallowed, can attract each other or another metal object inside the digestive system. This can lead to severe medical complications such as perforations, intestinal blockage or twisting, infection, blood poisoning, and even death.
The recalled kits, available exclusively on Walmart.com through vendor Joybuy, were sold between February 2022 and April 2023. Priced between $14 and $15, the kits were packaged in a clear plastic case, a tin storage box, and included a black storage bag.
The CPSC urges consumers who have purchased the kit to immediately discontinue its use and keep it away from children. For a full refund, customers should contact Joybuy directly. The seller is also proactively reaching out to all known purchasers.
This recall highlights the ongoing need for vigilance in product safety, particularly for items intended for children's use. Consumers can contact Joybuy at 302-426-4543, via email at oversea-service@jd.com, or online at walmart.com/seller/16214 for more information and to process their returns.
