Fatal High-Speed Car Crash at U.S.-Canada Border in Niagara Falls: No Indication of Terrorism, Says Governor
In a tragic incident at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, New York, a car traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into a checkpoint, resulting in an explosion that killed two individuals. Governor Kathy Hochul, addressing the media, emphasized that there are no indications of a terrorist attack linked to the event.
The two deceased were in the car involved in the crash, and at least one was identified as a resident of western New York. Contrary to initial reports, the vehicle was on the U.S. side of the border when it collided, caught fire, and exploded.
Governor Hochul, having viewed footage of the incident, described the scene as “absolutely surreal,” highlighting the car’s extreme speed and its launch over an 8-foot-high fence. Rickie Wilson, a witness working for Gray Line Tours, recounted his disbelief upon seeing the vehicle airborne, estimating it reached heights of 10 to 15 feet.
A Customs and Border Protection employee sustained minor injuries and was subsequently released from the hospital. Governor Hochul noted that the employee’s booth remarkably shielded them from more serious harm. She described the vehicle as being “basically incinerated,” with remnants scattered across multiple booths.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the crash, seeking to determine if it was intentional. Early assessments did not uncover any secondary explosive devices.
The crash, occurring on a busy travel day preceding Thanksgiving, led to a temporary shutdown of all western New York bridge crossings into the U.S., later reopened as per Hochul's announcement. In response to the incident, New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated the city is on heightened alert, and security measures have been intensified.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas communicated that there is no current threat related to this incident. He remains in contact with both U.S. and Canadian officials.
The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority announced an increase in security measures across their systems. Travelers at Buffalo Niagara International Airport were advised to anticipate additional screenings and vehicle checks.
Due to the incident, Amtrak’s Maple Leaf Train service from New York City to Toronto was terminated at Niagara Falls. The transportation authority advised travelers to allocate extra time for these heightened security measures in addition to the typical holiday travel considerations.
