Catastrophic Wildfires Engulf Chile: A National Emergency Declared
Chile is facing one of its most severe wildfire crises, prompting President Gabriel Boric to declare a state of emergency in the provinces of Marga Marga and Valparaíso. The raging fires have claimed the lives of at least 46 individuals, a number that is feared to rise as the situation unfolds.
In a decisive response to the escalating disaster, President Boric has announced the mobilization of additional military units to bolster the firefighting efforts, ensuring the availability of all necessary resources to combat the inferno. Interior Minister Carolina Tohá reported that 92 active fires are scorching various parts of the country, with approximately 43,000 hectares already devastated. Although 40 fires have been brought under control, emergency crews continue to battle 29 fires, with particular focus on the fires encroaching upon the urban areas of Valparaíso. The proximity of these fires to populated areas presents a significant risk, endangering both lives and property.
