At least 40 dead, dozens injured after attackers open fire inside busy Moscow-area concert venue
In a devastating attack that has shocked Russia, at least 40 people have been confirmed dead with dozens more injured after armed assailants opened fire inside the Crocus City Hall concert venue located in the Moscow region. The incident, which unfolded on the evening of March 22, 2024, has been described as one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Russia in recent years.
According to reports from Russian state media agencies TASS and RIA Novosti, three unidentified individuals dressed in camouflage forcefully entered the concert hall just before a scheduled performance by the music group Picnic. Witnesses and official reports indicate that the attackers used automatic weapons to spray bullets into the crowd and also deployed at least one grenade or incendiary device, causing a fire to erupt within the venue.
The chaos and panic that ensued were captured in video footage showing terrified concertgoers huddling together, screaming, and seeking cover behind seats as gunshots echoed through the hall. A large plume of black smoke was seen billowing from the building, which appeared to be engulfed in flames.
Emergency response teams, including a SWAT team and over 70 ambulance crews, were dispatched to the scene to assist victims and combat the blaze. The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation reported that around 100 people were evacuated from the building, with efforts ongoing to rescue individuals trapped on the roof.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the event as a "terrible tragedy" and extended his condolences to the victims' families. In response to the attack, Sobyanin announced the cancellation of all sports, cultural, and other public events in Moscow over the weekend.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no group has yet claimed responsibility. The Russia Prosecutor General’s Office has confirmed that an investigation is underway, treating the incident as a deliberate act of terrorism.
This attack comes amid heightened security concerns in Russia, with recent warnings from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow about potential terrorist threats targeting large gatherings, including concerts. The international community has expressed shock and condemnation over the incident, with calls for a strong and unified response to combat terrorism.
As the investigation continues, the city of Moscow and the entire nation mourn the loss of life and the impact of this heinous act of violence.
