Arizona Man Confesses to Murdering Missing Wife After Disappearance
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The husband of a missing Flagstaff woman has confessed to her murder just days after reporting her disappearance, bringing a tragic end to a week-long search that gripped the local community.
Daniel Paduchowski, 58, reported his wife, Kelly Paduchowski, missing on June 30, claiming she had not returned from a jog and swim. However, on Friday, July 5, authorities announced that Daniel had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, hiding a deceased body, and possession of illegal substances. This confession came as part of a plea deal that mandates a 16-year sentence in the Arizona Department of Corrections, with no possibility of early release.
The investigation began when Kelly's cellphone data placed her at the Schultz Creek Trailhead at approximately 10:20 a.m. on the day she disappeared. Daniel was later observed in the same area around 11:30 a.m. The phone returned to the couple's home in Coconino Estates shortly after noon, and Kelly's car was later found at the Campbell Mesa trailhead, with surveillance footage showing Daniel at the location around the same time.
Authorities launched an extensive search operation involving drones, mountain bike patrols, search dogs, and over 60 volunteer search teams. Despite these efforts, it was Daniel's cooperation under the plea deal that led to the discovery of Kelly's body on Friday morning. The exact location of her body has not been disclosed due to the ongoing investigation.
Flagstaff Police Department Chief Sean Connolly and Coconino County Attorney Michael Tunink held a press conference on Friday afternoon to announce the grim findings. Tunink revealed that Daniel provided information that led to the discovery of Kelly's body, her personal belongings, and the weapon used in the crime. He also expressed deep sympathy for Kelly's family and friends, acknowledging the immense tragedy they are facing.
"This has been on everybody's mind," Connolly said, noting the community's collective concern and efforts to find Kelly. He praised the family's strength and resolve in handling the tragic situation.
The investigation uncovered evidence of domestic violence at the Paduchowski residence, with witnesses and neighbors providing critical tips and testimony. An initial report detailed how officers found blood on the ground outside the home, and a nearby resident reported hearing screams on the day Kelly disappeared. Investigators also found clothing believed to belong to Kelly in a trash bin, along with other items such as a camera in a case and a large amount of unused twine.
Daniel Paduchowski was first taken into custody on charges of aggravated assault and dangerous drug possession/use on Tuesday, July 2. During questioning, police noted that his nails had been cut extremely short, and he had several nicks and healing cuts on his hands. These observations, combined with the evidence and witness testimonies, led to his arrest and subsequent confession.
Flagstaff Mayor Becky Daggett offered her condolences to Kelly's family, highlighting the community's efforts to find their neighbor. The victim's family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.
The resolution of this case, while providing some closure, leaves a community mourning the loss of a beloved member. As the investigation continues, authorities remain committed to ensuring justice for Kelly Paduchowski and supporting her family through this tragic ordeal.
