AI Worm Infects users via AI-Enabled Email Clients
The digital landscape is facing a new kind of cyber threat with the emergence of the Morris II generative AI worm, a sophisticated malware capable of infiltrating AI-powered email clients and stealing confidential data. Named after the notorious Morris worm of 1988, this new AI worm represents a significant evolution in cyber threats, leveraging the capabilities of generative AI to execute its malicious activities.
The Morris II worm targets AI applications and AI-enabled email assistants that generate text and images using advanced models such as Gemini Pro, ChatGPT 4.0, and LLaVA. Researchers from Cornell Tech, the Israel Institute of Technology, and Intuit have demonstrated the worm's ability to use adversarial self-replicating prompts against these models, similar to traditional cyber-attack methods like SQL injection and buffer overflow attacks.
The worm operates by infecting the email assistant using a large language model (LLM) to pull in extra data from outside its system. This data is then sent to generative AI services like GPT-4 or Gemini Pro to create text content, which in turn breaks the GenAI service's safeguards and successfully extracts sensitive information. The worm can also encode the self-replicating prompt into an image, causing the email assistant to forward messages containing spam, abuse, or even propaganda to new email clients, further spreading the infection.
During the course of their research, the team was able to mine confidential information, including credit card details and social security numbers. The implications of such a worm are far-reaching, as it proves that the threat is no longer theoretical and requires immediate attention and effective solutions.
In response to these findings, the researchers have reported their concerns to Google and OpenAI. While Google has not commented on the research, OpenAI's spokesperson acknowledged the issue, stating that they are working on making their systems more secure and advising developers to ensure they are not working with harmful input.
As AI and neural processing units (NPUs) are increasingly implemented in various devices and services, including PCs, smartphones, cars, and email services, the industry must pace itself and develop countermeasures to protect against such threats.
