U.S. Shootings
1 Killed and 24 Injured in Mass Shooting in Akron, Ohio
Authorities recovered two handguns and approximately 35 shell casings from the scene
Akron, Ohio – In the early hours of Sunday morning, a mass shooting at a large street party in Akron, Ohio, resulted in the death of one individual and left 24 others injured. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an urgent call for public assistance in identifying those responsible.
The incident occurred just after midnight near the intersection of Kelly Avenue and 8th Avenue, a neighborhood located approximately 40 miles south of Cleveland. According to the Akron Police Department, officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene with numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
The deceased has been identified as a 27-year-old man. The injured, whose ages range from 19 to 43, were transported to various local hospitals. Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital admitted seven patients, one of whom is in critical condition. Summa Health treated 15 individuals, with 13 sustaining non-life-threatening injuries and one remaining in critical condition.
Authorities recovered two handguns and approximately 35 shell casings from the scene, indicating the use of multiple firearms. Despite the evidence collected, no suspects have been apprehended, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Akron Police Chief Brian Harding, who recently assumed his role, expressed the city's collective grief and determination to bring those responsible to justice.
"Our city is reeling from the devastation of senseless violence," Chief Harding stated. "With over two dozen victims, the pain and trauma resonate throughout Akron today as we seek answers. We will bring those responsible to account, and we need the community's help to do so."
Witnesses described the street party as initially festive, with attendees wearing white T-shirts and dancing on top of vehicles. However, the atmosphere quickly turned violent as multiple fights broke out, leading to the mass shooting. One witness, Brittney, recounted the scene to a local news affiliate, describing how the situation escalated rapidly.
"There were people on the street fighting; women were trying to pull their men away," Brittney said. "But at this point, it got too out of hand. There were probably 20 to 30 men fighting in the street. I wasted no time getting through there and out of there."
Another witness shared their experience of the event's abrupt transformation from a lively gathering to a scene of chaos and fear.
"Everyone was wearing white T-shirts; there were women on top of vehicles dancing. It looked like a scene from a spring break movie. It looked like everyone was having a good time," the witness recalled. "On our way back, it was a completely different scene."
In response to the shooting, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Chief Harding held a press conference, urging anyone with information to come forward. They emphasized the importance of community cooperation in preventing further violence and retaliation.
"We are imploring the community to come forward with anything that you might know regarding this terrible incident," Chief Harding said. "We have concerns about the possibility of retaliation and are taking steps to prevent that, and we need the community’s help."
Mayor Malik echoed these sentiments, lamenting the prevalence of violence and the ease with which weapons are used to resolve disputes.
"The level of violence in our community and frankly in communities across the country is out of control; the availability of weapons, the casualness with which some people use weapons," Mayor Malik stated. "Something that in the past may have been a fistfight now turns into a deadly shooting like this. We have to hold people accountable when they commit violence."
The Akron Police Department has set up a dedicated tip line for information related to the shooting. Individuals can contact the Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490 or Summit County Crimestoppers at 330-434-COPS. Tips can also be submitted anonymously via text by sending TIPSCO to 274637.
As the investigation continues, the Akron community remains in mourning, grappling with the aftermath of yet another act of senseless violence. The authorities are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring that justice is served for the victims and their families.
