One person dead after bus hijacked in Los Angeles

A recent and tragic incident unfolded in Los Angeles when a gunman hijacked a Metro bus, resulting in a dramatic police chase and the death of one passenger. The event occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 25, 2024, and has since drawn significant attention due to its violent nature and the challenges it posed to law enforcement and public safety.

The incident began around 12:45 a.m. at the intersection of Figueroa Street and Manchester Avenue in South Los Angeles. The suspect, armed with a gun, boarded the bus and took the driver hostage. At that time, there were two passengers on board. The driver managed to activate the emergency alert system, which displayed "Emergency" and "911 Call Police" on the bus's front display, notifying authorities of the situation.

As the hijacker forced the driver to continue driving through downtown Los Angeles, police initiated a pursuit that lasted over an hour. During this time, one of the passengers was shot by the suspect. The pursuit involved multiple tactical maneuvers by law enforcement, including the use of spike strips to eventually bring the bus to a halt at Figueroa Street and 117th Place.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), assisted by a SWAT team, surrounded the bus once it was immobilized. Officers deployed flash-bang grenades and beanbag rounds to disorient the suspect and facilitate their entry into the vehicle. This tactical intervention allowed them to apprehend the hijacker without further harm to the remaining individuals on board.

Tragically, despite efforts to save him, the passenger who had been shot succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital. The other passenger managed to remain unharmed throughout the ordeal by hiding in the back of the bus. Remarkably, the bus driver also emerged unscathed physically but understandably shaken by the events.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) expressed relief that their operator was unharmed and extended support to him following this traumatic experience. They also commended the swift response from LAPD officers who managed to resolve a highly volatile situation with minimal additional harm.

Deputy Chief Donald Graham of LAPD praised the driver's composure during such a dangerous encounter. He noted that maintaining control of the situation for as long as he did was commendable under such dire circumstances. The LAPD has launched an investigation into the incident to determine further details about what led up to this violent act.

This hijacking is not an isolated case in Los Angeles's transit system; earlier in March 2024, another bus was hijacked under different circumstances, leading to injuries when it collided with several vehicles and a hotel.
