Dallas police officer 'executed,' 2 others injured in shootings
The suspect was fatally shot by officers following a pursuit, police said.
Dallas, TX - A police officer was killed, and two others were injured in what has been described as a targeted attack. This incident unfolded late Thursday night, August 29, 2024, in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas. The suspect, identified as Corey Cobb-Bey, was also killed during a subsequent police pursuit and shootout.
The attack began when Dallas police officers responded to a distress call on the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive. Upon arrival, officers found Officer Darron Burks critically injured inside his patrol vehicle. According to Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia, Officer Burks was approached by Cobb-Bey, who initiated a conversation while recording the interaction on a cellphone. Without warning, Cobb-Bey drew a handgun and shot Burks, who was still seated in his vehicle. This act was described by Chief Garcia as an "execution," emphasizing the deliberate nature of the attack.
Following the initial shooting, Cobb-Bey engaged in a gunfight with responding officers. Senior Corporal Jamie Farmer was shot in the leg, and Senior Corporal Karissa David was shot in the face during the exchange. Despite their injuries, the officers managed to return fire. Cobb-Bey then fled the scene, leading police on a high-speed chase north on Interstate 35, which ended in Lewisville, Texas, approximately 25 miles from Dallas. There, Cobb-Bey exited his vehicle armed with a long gun and was subsequently shot and killed by pursuing officers.
The incident has left the Dallas Police Department and the community in mourning. Officer Burks, a former high school math teacher, had joined the police force with a commitment to serve and protect his community. His transition from education to law enforcement was driven by a desire to make a positive impact, a sentiment echoed by those who knew him. Burks was remembered as a mentor to troubled youths, with former students expressing gratitude for his guidance and support.
The two injured officers, Farmer and David, were taken to local hospitals. At the time of reporting, one was in critical condition while the other was stable. The attack has sparked an outpouring of support from the community and officials. Texas Governor Greg Abbott expressed his condolences and support for the Dallas Police Department, urging prayers for the swift recovery of the injured officers.
The motive behind Cobb-Bey's actions remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing. Chief Garcia emphasized that the attack was not an ambush but a targeted execution, highlighting the risks faced by law enforcement officers simply for wearing their uniforms. This incident underscores the dangers inherent in police work and the sacrifices made by officers in the line of duty.
In response to the tragedy, flags at city facilities have been lowered to half-staff in honor of Officer Burks. The Dallas Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, seeking to understand the motivations of Cobb-Bey and prevent future incidents. The loss of Officer Burks serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced by those who dedicate their lives to public safety.
