National Park Accident
Body of climber missing in Glacier National Park is found
He was reported missing last week after he left his hiking group and then failed to appear at a rendezvous point.
The body of Grant Marcuccio, a 32-year-old climber from Whitefish, Montana, who had gone missing in Glacier National Park, was found on August 25, 2024, after a week-long search. Marcuccio, an experienced mountaineer and hiker, had separated from his group on August 18 while attempting to summit McPartland Peak, part of a rugged and remote area of the park. The group had planned to meet at a designated location, but when Marcuccio failed to arrive, his companions reported him missing, triggering an extensive search operation.
Search efforts were quickly mobilized, involving various agencies including the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Flathead County Search and Rescue. Two Bear Air, a well-known search and rescue team, played a critical role in the operation, conducting aerial searches over the mountainous terrain. Despite challenging conditions, which included the park's notoriously difficult topography, Marcuccio's body was eventually spotted by Two Bear Air near McPartland Peak, about a third of a mile east of the ridgeline between Heavens Peak and McPartland Peak.
The location of Marcuccio's body and the traumatic injuries he sustained suggest that he likely fell while attempting to navigate the steep and treacherous slopes of the peak. His body was subsequently recovered and transported to the Apgar horse corrals, where it was met by the Flathead County coroner.
Marcuccio was well-known in the local community for his passion for the outdoors and his frequent adventures in Glacier National Park. He was employed at WhiteStar Organics Farm in Kalispell and had a reputation for his engaging personality and love of nature, often sharing stories of his hikes and climbs with friends and local media.
The tragic outcome of this incident serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent risks associated with mountaineering, particularly in the challenging environment of Glacier National Park. The park, known for its stunning but rugged landscapes, often presents unpredictable weather and difficult terrain, which can quickly turn dangerous even for experienced climbers.
As investigations into the exact circumstances of Marcuccio's fall continue, park officials have extended their gratitude to all the agencies and volunteers who participated in the search and recovery efforts. The incident underscores the importance of preparation, caution, and communication when exploring remote areas, particularly in such a vast and unpredictable wilderness as Glacier National Park.
